HALO turns the joy of collecting into an invitation to encounter the Catholic faith—and ultimately to desire Heaven.
The HALO story
The question became: What if students could collect something that made them excited about their faith?
That question grew into a student-created project where research, original artwork, prayer, presentation, and leadership became part of the same journey.

A trading-card collector and campus minister wondered what a Catholic trading card could look like. The idea stayed with him, but without an artist, it could not yet come to life.
During an eighth-grade study hall, a student shared that she wanted to leave something meaningful behind before graduation. Suddenly, the card idea had a reason to return.
Another student who was always drawing joined the conversation. Lunchtime meetings followed, more students became interested, and the team began imagining what a full collection could become.
A fourth founder helped shape the project, and the students voted on the name HALO—a symbol of sainthood, Heaven, and the mission that still guides the project: inspire others to desire Heaven.
The original team
The art took shape
HALO needed more than an idea—it needed a visual language. Salma R., one of the original student founders and the lead student artist, helped shape that identity through original artwork, early card art, and the development of the HALO logo itself.
Her work kept the project visibly student-created even as the drawings were transformed into polished collectibles.
From idea to blessed pack
After meeting with the founders, we invited the entire middle school to help create HALO—and nearly three-fourths of the students wanted in. There was no practical way to supervise that many artists during lunch and recess, so the founders proposed bringing the project into religion class. That decision transformed one small idea into a schoolwide creative mission, giving students the chance to research, create, and shape Series 1 together.
The first school launch
Students turned their research, original drawings, and finished cards into trifold displays. Students across the school moved through the showcase, learned about the faith, explored the cards, and received the first packs.
Student stewardship behind the mission
HALO Club is the student team responsible for keeping the mission moving behind the scenes. Members care for the card collections, handle all packaging in-house, manage finances and rewards, lead marketing and sales, help coordinate events, and make the day-to-day decisions that allow HALO to keep growing.
As stewards of the project, students are entrusted with its funds, artwork, and creative direction. Together, they set goals, make responsible decisions, and determine how profits can be reinvested in the mission—including projects that strengthen the Catholic identity of our school.
Where the art began
Series 1 includes 76 sketch parallels—the first student-drawn versions of the same subjects that became the finished base cards. They preserve the artwork at the moment each card first took shape.
Here, St. Peter's original sketch is shown beside the finished St. Peter base card.

Historic HALO cards
Only six were produced, and no more will ever be made. Four are owned by the four founders; one is owned by a student, and one by a staff member.
This card was created to honor two people whose early support helped HALO move from idea to reality. Two copies are owned by those supporters, and two are owned by students.
A special-edition Our Lady of Champion card was created for HALO's first major public exposure. One thousand were given away at Mile 7 during Walk to Mary, a pilgrimage attended by roughly 10,000 people.
One of two special Series 1 insert designs created from original artwork by lead student artist Salma R. Only ten copies of this design were produced.

The heart of HALO
HALO has become a tool for prayer, faith formation, family conversation, confidence, and student leadership.
“The HALO Card program is just a beautiful way to connect the lives of the saints and our faith.”
— Fr. José López
Beyond the classroom
School leaders, community supporters, and members of the wider Catholic community wanted to learn more about what the students had created.
HALO's first major public exposure came during Walk to Mary. Students displayed the cards, spoke with pilgrims, and shared the mission with the wider community.
The presentation included the process, student artwork, finished cards, and the story behind HALO—with students speaking and representing the project themselves.
